Second Grade Newsletter

Dear Parents,

The following Reading and Math skills are what your child will be learning this week.  We are reading Around the Pond:  Who’s Been Here?.  Our genre focus is Realistic Fiction which is realistic characters and events come to life in a fictional plot. 

 

Vocabulary These are words to practice in reading and conversation with your child.	Story Vocabulary: bank, crater, edge, moss, path, shallow, containers, dangles, swamp azalea, terrapin, scolds, squishy, mussel		High Frequency words:  across, brother, great, stand, around, found, because, front, been, water, caught		Multiple-Meaning Words: Words that have at least 2 meanings: watch tie bark	Alphabetical Order: The students will learn to look at the first 2 letters of the alphabet to put them in order.
Spelling Please have your child practice these words and sentences for the test on Friday.	Please be sure your child can spell these words and give a sentence for each one. Words with double consonants:  bell     off     all     mess     add                                        hill     well     egg      will     grass Word Wall Words:    which    their    said    do Challenge words:     crater    edge    shallow    caught Sentence:  Which one do you add?                    The egg fell off the hill of grass.
Grammar Practice writing a complete sentence with your child.	Exclamation Sentences: 1.     An exclamation sentence is a sentence that shows strong feeling. 2.    An exclamation sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period.
Comprehension Strategy and Skill	Listening Comprehension: Listen to a story about animals and identify similarities and differences,  one animal to another	Categorize and Classify: Means to group together things that are alike in many ways.		Monitor and Clarify: As your child reads, be sure they understand what they are reading (Monitor).  If they are unsure, they can reread to make it clear (Clarify).		Drawing  Conclusions: Readers can use story clues to understand something that is not stated directly in the text.
Math	Mixed Story Problems, Two Step Story Problems, Strategies using doubles
