Second Grade Newsletter Theme 2 " Fables"

*A fable is a short story that teaches a lesson or moral.  The characters are often animals that act and talk like humans.

The High Frequency Words for this week are:           

enough, hear, hungry, idea, laugh, learn, little, more, people and water

Vocabulary These are words to practice during this week.	Onomatopoeia or sound words: Words whose sounds make you think of their meanings, such as sizzle and hiss.	Compound Animals: A compound word is made up of two shorter words put together to make a new word.  Compound animals are like: butterfly grasshopper gold fish blackbird	Antonyms: Review that antonyms are words with opposite meanings like: hard- soft fast - slow	Vocabulary Words for the week: fable lesson moral	Vocabulary Expansion: Brainstorm describing words that tell about what each of these fable characters are like: Tortoise Hare Grasshopper Crow
Spelling	Words with the final /k/ sound:  neck          lake          sick          ask          lick     pack          woke         kick          lock           poke   Review words:         will     each    about    down Challenge words:     package   fable    lesson    animal Sentence: Will you ask about the sick cat?    How will each pack lock up?
Grammar	Stringy Sentences:       1.  A stringy sentence has too many "ands". 2.  We will learn how to break a stringy sentence into shorter sentences.
Comprehension	Listening Comprehension: Listen to a fable and tell what the moral is.	Predict and Infer: After reading the title and a few sentences of a fable, the children will predict what might happen in a fable.  Think about story details as you predict.	Review: 1.  What is a fable? 2.  How is a  fable different from other stories? 3.  How does the moral of the story help you to understand the lesson?	Discuss the fables in a small group.  Discussion tips: Share your ideas. Take turns. Speak clearly. Keep to the topic. Look at the speaker. Think what the speaker is saying.	Class discussion:    How is the hare like the grasshopper?    If the ants had given the grasshopper food, what would be the moral?

Writing  We will be working on writing our Animal Habitat paragraphs.  Our class is concentrating on the Desert Habitat and the Ocean Habitat.  We will be starting our first paragraph this week.  We are working on writing main idea and supporting detail sentences.
