Week of November 26th - 30th

This week we will be starting our canned food drive at school.  This project will aid the Food Bank in Pocatello.  This week's daily themes are:


Monday- “Get Souped Up!  For The Idaho Food Bank!”  Bring canned or dried soup, chili, stew,  and crackers.

Tuesday- Breakfast of Champions!  Hot and cold cereals, pancake mix, syrup, honey, jelly, Instant breakfast, muffin mix, canned or dried fruit juice, canned or powdered milk.

Wednesday- Lunch Bunch!  Bring canned meats, soup, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, and crackers.

Thursday- Dinner Tonight!  Meats, pasta, instant potatoes, canned sauces, macaroni and cheese, chili, canned vegetables, biscuit mix, microwavable meals such as spaghetti, ravioli (nothing frozen), canned or dried fruit.

Friday- Snack Attack! Granola bars, fruit bars, dried fruit, crackers, pudding cups and popcorn.
Students can bring items in for any day.  I will count them on the appropriate day for our class count.  There are daily prizes for the winning class as well as an overall prize for most items collected.

Dear Parents,

The following Reading and Math Skills are what your child will be learning this week.  We are reading Chinatown by William Low.  Our genre focus is Realistic Fiction which are stories that could be real.

Vocabulary
These are words to practice in reading and conversation with your child.
Story Vocabulary:  apartment, delivery, handcarts, market, celebrations
 
High Frequency Words:
during, heard, lion, winter, watch, until, move, people
Compound Words:
Two words that when put together, make a new word.
popcorn
something
campfire
chalkboard
firefly
Adding –er and –est endings to base words.
Spelling
Please have your child practice these words and sentences for the test on Friday.
Please be sure your child can spell these words and give a sentence for each one.
Words consonant clusters:  when, wash, chase, which, both, catch, sheep, teeth, then, dish, teach, than    
Word Wall Words:  out    many    she    them
Challenge words:     market    fresh    apartment    handcarts
Sentences:   Go chase both of them!    She will teach me to catch.
Grammar
Practice writing common nouns with your child.
Common Nouns:
A common noun is the name of a person, place or thing
 
cat     teacher    park   tree   bike   sun
Comprehension
Strategy and Skills:  
ABC Order: 
Students will put words in ABC order to the third letter.
Summarize:
  To tell, in your own words, what happened so far in the story. 
Making Judgements:
We use facts from the story, and our beliefs, to make and confirm opinions about the characters or situations.
Math
Working with money.
Making change
Adding coins
 
Adding coins and making change.
Reminders
November Book Orders due Nov. 28  You may order online at scholastic.com/book clubs.  Our class code is GVFKW.  If you would like to order books for Christmas without your child knowing just let me know and I will call when they come in.
