Dear Parents,

The following Reading and Math Skills are what your child will be learning next week.  We are reading Dragon Gets By by Dav Pilkey.  Our genre focus is Fantasy,  stories that tell about things that could not happen in real life.

Vocabulary These are words to practice in reading and conversation with your child.	Story Vocabulary:  balances, hungry, shopping, dairy, shopper, vegetables, diet	High Frequency Words: began, their, thought, very, bought, front, kitchen, roll, until, goes, begin, gone		Reading and recognizing words with the short a and i vowel sound		What is a sentence?
Spelling Please have your child practice these words and sentences for the test on Friday.	Please be sure your child can spell these words and give a sentence for each one. Words with short a and i:     bag, has, win, I , dig, ran, sat, if, is, his, am, was   Word Wall Words:  as, with, they, at   Challenge words:     crumbs, spread, noise Sentences:   The fox had a fun job.      His leg was wet.
Grammar Practice writing complete sentences.	Writing Complete Sentences: A sentence is a group of words that tells what someone or something does.  A sentence always contains a naming part (noun) and an action part (verb).  A sentence always begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark.   The dog ran after the cat.      The car rolled down the steep hill.
Comprehension Strategy and Skills:	Base words with –s, -ed, and –ing endings:  Students will identify a base word and add endings in sentences.		Summarize:   To tell, in your own words, what happened so far in the story.		Cause and Effect: An action or event that causes something to happen. Multiple Meaning Words:   Homophones   Days of the Week:  Identify days of the week in order.  List things they do on each day of the week.
Math	Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.		Add and subtract within 20 .		Use drawings to show answers.		Use a number line correctly.
Reminders	Friday is Spirit Day--Wear your Ellis colors or tee shirts.    Back to School Night--Thursday, Sept. 5 The evening will start at 5:30 p.m. for families with students in grades 1-2.   During this time, we will meet in the auditorium with information about the school, the transition to the Idaho Core State Standards, Title One, PTA and upcoming events.  This session will last 15 minutes after which you will have an opportunity to visit your child’s classroom from 5:45 – 6:15 p.m.  If you have a child in both grades, the session will be repeated again for grades 1–2 from 6:15–6:45 p.m. so that you may attend both classes.
